H.I.M - Brixton Academy 25 April 2006

smalldarkfairy was kind enough to buy me a ticket to this show.  i'm not really a fan of the band i have only really heard their stuff when she plays it to me, it sounds a bit old fashioned to me, but well crafted.

so, firstly... if were in china where they execute u for any misdemeanor the sound blokey would have been beheaded, in fact maybe he already was coz he cant have ears......... appalling levels, couldnt hear the guitar or the vocals and the kick drums were nearly knocking me over

the setup was campy goth, big chandeliers and the heartagram thingy projected behind. very suitable.

ville's stage persona seems to have been lifted completely from nick cave.... the way he holds the mic, the body language, the chainsmoking... i couldnt understand a word he said between songs

when he gestured for people to clap their hands the whole place did as they were told, amusing and scary at the same time

basically, if u like slightly gothy metal, you'd love it... it does what it says on the tin

I went to see them last year (dont know why) and he was drunk and got everyone to chant "black sabbath" this went on for like 20 minutes got so boring I was like get off the stage you drunk bastard.yeah I just thought this had a tiny bit of relevance to your review. oh yeah then at the end of the concert the drummer threw his sticks into the crowd and one hit me on the head.on top of that this silly french ladie kept waving her stupid flag in my face.yeah you dont care.

I used to be quite a fan of HIM in their early days, but after seeing them live a couple of years ago in Portsmouth my respect for them pretty much evaporated. Just like you said, couldn't hear a word of the vocals and had to put up with idiotic fourteen year olds standing behind me yelling "Strip! Strip!" at Valo the entire time. Though every band has some crazy fans.

The worst thing about that gig though was the band who opened for them. Cathedral were absolutely abysmal: every song merged into the previous one other...an hour of painful, wordless yowling.

Shame really.
