GLAM-OU-RAMA Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Welcome to the FAQ.
We never expected to need a FAQ on GLAM-OU-RAMA, but as the site has grown more popular and has added more and more features some things (at first glance) seem a little complicated so we thought we'd write this to answer the more common problems.

If your question isn't answered here, or you have a suggestion for the site then we'd love to hear from you (email us), but please do read through this guide before asking anything.

We've split this guide up into the main sections of the site:-

Registration & Login Forum & Messages Galleries Reviews Events Calendar Charts CLUB BOHEMIA Anything Else

Registration & Login
Q: Why should I register?
A: Well people won't know who you are otherwise! GLAM-OU-RAMA lets you create a profile where you can say a bit about yourself, list your favourite things, create galleries for your photos, review albums and other things you like, add events (if your band has a gig for instance), take part in our forums, and make new friends, and lots of other things and it doesn't cost a penny. So, you really should to make the most out of the site.
Q: Why do you need my email to register?
A: We require a valid email address so that people don't spam the site or create false accounts. We don't give out your email address & you can choose whether or not to recieve our newsletter). Once you register you will recieve an activation email to enable your account.
Q: Ok so I tried to register, but I didn't recieve an activation email.
A: If the activation email didn't arrive you probably mistakenly filled in your email address. You can either sign up again or send us an email and we will correct your email address and activate your account.
Q: I got the activation email but when I followed the link it didn't log me on.
A: This is usually a cookie problem. Make sure that cookies are switched on (this page on statcounter provides thorough instructions for doing this in most browsers). Sometimes Internet Explorer and AOL browsers get a bit confused with their cookies so if this still isn't working you can try deleting the cookies used by this site by following this link (this will only delete cookies on GLAM-OU-RAMA, not your cookies from other sites).
Q: I have activated my account, but I can't login.
A: Again this is usually due to cookies, follow the instructions above.
Q: I have tried everything you suggest and I still can't login/register.
A: Now you are just being difficult! I guess you better send us an email explaining the problem and we'll do our best to fix it.
Forum & Messages
Q: What are the Forums?
A: Our forums are a place where our registered users can post messages about any topic they like (guests can still view posts, but they can't respond to them). If you have an event you wish to publicise we urge you to use the events calendar instead.
Q: What are 'friends only' posts?
A: This is an expiremental new feature on GLAM-OU-RAMA which allows you to use the forums to post messages that only people on your friends list can view. If someone on your friends list posts a new 'friends only' message but you are not on their friends list, you will not however see it. You will see any replies they make to your messages however. If over time someone adds you to their friends list you will then be able to see all their old 'friends only' posts.
This is an often requested feature, so we've made it available while it's still under development. Thus there may still be a few bugs with it so please report any discrepances to us.
Q: How do I use the forums?
A: More information about using the forums can be found in the forum F.A.Q.
Galleries & Photos
Q: Why should I create a gallery?
A: To show off! While GLAM-OU-RAMA provides free space to upload your pictures it's not meant as a repository for all your images (we simply don't have the space or bandwidth and want to keep this site free for everyone). So only upload photos that are appropriate to the site, ie. photos of yourself and anything glam. We don't want to see your holiday snaps, new house, baby, dog (cats are allowed) or your auntie mabel, use a site like photobucket or pbase for that.
Q: What's the difference between my profile photo & my gallery?
A: Your profile photo is what people see when they look at your photo, and we also create a small version of it to put beside any comments you make on events, galleries, reviews and in user charts.
Galleries on the other hand you can have as many of as you wish (again please keep them appropriate for the site). Each gallery can have a theme with as many photos as you like within it.
Q: So how do I upload my profile photo?
A: There are various links to uploading your profile photo, the user menu, your home page, your profile page, etc. Your profile photo should be less than 450*450 pixels, but if it is bigger we have a little program that will attempt to automatically size it for you. It will also create a small version to be used at various points on the site.
Q: I got an error when uploading my profile photo.
A: This usually happens if your image is too large - upload a smaller photo.
It can also happen with JPEG images with weird formats. These images invariably are created by Adobe Photoshop which embeds extra details into the image that our image uploader doesn't like. This page on the Adobe website gives more details and explains how to fix this.
Q: So how do I create a gallery?
A: Select 'Create Gallery' from the Gallery menu (you will only see this option if you are registered and logged in).
Enter a name & a description for your gallery. Then click the browse button which lets you select an image from your hard drive to represent your gallery.

While a gallery can have as many images as you like it it, you must first select one image to represent this gallery - which is what people see when they look in the main Gallery section of the website. Once they select that image they will then see the individual images inside your gallery.
Q: So how do I add further pictures to my gallery?
A: Select 'My Galleries' from the Gallery menu (you will only see this option if you are registered and logged in).
You will be shown all your galleries (as well as some statistics, gallery views, gallery comments & most popular pictures).
Within each gallery you'll see a image which when clicked lets you add a new photo. Also if you are in one of your galleries there is always a text link to 'add new image'.
You simply give the image a name & again hit browse to find the image on your computer. It is then uploaded into your user area and a thumbnail is automatically created.
Q: I see a gray box instead of a thumbnail?
A: This is due to the problem with some Photoshop images having an invalid format. Whenever this happens one of our moderators is inforormed and will create a proper thumbnail for you as soon as possible. However if you can't wait then follow the guidlines given in 'Q: I got an error when uploading my profile photo.' and try uploading a valid image instead.
Q: I want to change the order that the images appear in my gallery.
A: Go into the gallery in question and select the button where you can re-order your images (and change their descriptons all at once).
Reviews
Q: Why should I create a review?
A: GLAM-OU-RAMA is a user based community, which means we want you to contribute. While we put up reviews of artists, bands, books, etc that we like we're even more interested in hearing what you love (or hate).
Q: What can I review?
A: Pretty much whatever you like, we have categories for Albums, Artists, Bands, Books, Films, Gigs, Songs, Websites & TV Shows. If you think we should add further categories email us.
Q: Why does my review have to be approved?
A: This is simply to make sure that reviews are of sufficient content, we won't refuse a review just because we don't like something you happen to like! If you are reviewing Greek Folk music, no matter how good an album it's not the kind of thing our users come to the site for, so it will be kindly rejected. We also want to make sure reviews are of a decent size and are interesting; just saying "i love this album" is not sufficient; use the forums for that.
Events Calendar
Q: What's the events calander for?
A: We do our best to provide listings of clubs, gigs and events going on (mostly in London where we are based), but we don't know everything. So we urge you to post events for your band, club, etc that you think other people within the GLAM-OU-RAMA community would like.
Q: Can't I just use the forums?
A: NO!
We urge you to use the events calander for this and not our forums. The calander has been designed for this purpose and is a better place for this than the forums. People can search the calander for events, can say if they are going and can post comments on your event so it makes much more sense to post it here. Events in the forum may be deleted at our discretion.
Q: The form for adding events looks awfully complicated.
A: Take a deep breath, it's not that bad. We are just trying to let you give us as much information as possible. Not all fields are mandatory, but the more you tell us, the more interesting it will look for our members.

The most complex part of the calander is the dates section. If your event is a one-off, then just choose 'first date' as the date for your event. However if it runs for a few days or is repeating (ie. every 1st Monday of the month) then you can fill in 'last date' and the appropriate details about when it occurs instead of creating multiple listings for this event. This keeps all comments on previous events in your listing (ie. if someone posted about a night in January, people looking at the event in February would still be able to see this comment and thus get a better idea about previous nights).
Charts
Q: How do the charts work?
A: The charts are based upon what our members fill in their favourites. For every person who has an identical listing in their favourites the count for that item increases.
Q: Why don't I see myself listed for artist X?
A: Did you spell it the same as everyone else? ie. Under bands if you have 'Bowie' and everyone else has 'David Bowie' then they will be shown separately. If you can't find something then use the chart search feature to see how other people have labeled an item.
GLAM-OU-RAMA Club Bohemia
Q: So you have a club as well?
A: Actually we were doing the club long before this website. Initially the website was created just to tell people about our forthcoming nights. But as time has progressed the website has become bigger than the club. We have members from over 40 countries now (if you believe statistics) sharing ideas, photos, news and reviews about all things glam and alternative.
Q: So what's the club like?
A: At present we host a night called 'Club Bohemia' (more info here) every 4th Saturday of the month at the Buffalo Bars in Highbury & Islington, London. It's an intimate and friendly night where we play the music we love (our music policy is on the Club Bohemia page) and we have different bands and performers performing throughout the night to entertain and amuse.
Q: Do I have to be a member to come to the club?
A: No, but you should join anyway!
The club is open to everyone, but we do urge people to make an effort with their clothes (our motto being 'life is a stage, so dress to perform'). On our busy nights when we don't have room for everyone those who are better dressed will have more chance of jumping the queues!
You should print off one of our flyers (if you don't have one already) so that entry is just £4.
Q: I think my band/show/group/performance would be great for Club Bohemia, can we play?
A: Possibly. Get in touch (email us) and we can discuss your show and tell you where to send a demo.
Anything Else?
Q: How can you provide all this for free?
A: Because we are too kind! Basically we felt that there wasn't a decent glam community on the internet for people to make friends and discuss music and their lifestyles. Sure there's plenty of forums, but they are mostly band based, we wanted something more general. Plus a forum only lets users discuss things. On GLAM-OU-RAMA you can read/write reviews, show off your photos, advertise your events, see what other people look like & what things they like. We feel we're creating a worldwide glam community and providing a useful and fun service and while it does cost money we feel it's worth it. If at some point in the future the site became much busier and more expensive we'd consider taking donations, but we won't charge for using the site or have silly pop-up adverts or anything like that.
Q: I've read through everything and my question is still not answered, what should I do?
A: We've done our best to cover some of the most obvious questions about using the site, but we will have missed some things either because we think they are obvious or just because we've missed them! Feel free to email us any other questions that you have.
